In addition to their ribbons and cash prizes (through awards of excellence), all award winners received gifted Artist Memberships to the Lake Wales Arts Council which includes opportunities for studio time, access to educational services, photography services for their artwork, and networking opportunities.
These award winners faced stiff competition from a total of 119 entered pieces, 63 of which were juried into the gallery for display, and 44 artists. Our judge, Ms. Susan Altman of Middlesex County College in New Jersey, had her work cut out for her in reviewing this show. However, her expansive experience made her exactly the right person for this job. She offered video commentary on our award winners and the exhibit overall.
The Lake Wales Arts Council hosted the Opening Reception and Awards Ceremony for the Chip Thullbery Fine Arts Invitational on November 13th where the winners were announced. This is the second annual juried fine arts gallery competition for the arts council and the competition is dedicated to Mr. Chip Thullbery, who was a long-time member of the Lake Wales Arts Council. Chip was instrumental to the inception of this Fine Arts Invitational and has been a driving force behind the Lake Wales Arts Festival. He was a model of community involvement and selfless service, and it was an honor to work with him at the Lake Wales Arts Council.
Ms. Susan Altman is a practicing artist, educator, Professor, and Assistant Chairperson in the Visual, Performing and Media Arts Department at Middlesex County College. She has taught studio art for over 33 years. She received her BFA in Printmaking from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her MFA in Printmaking from the Tyler School of Art of Temple University. Her work has been shown both nationally and internationally, and can be found in numerous public and private collections including the Museum of Modern Art/Franklin Furnace Artist Book Collection at MoMA, William J. Dane Fine Prints Collection at The Newark Public Library, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Brooklyn Museum, and the Library of Congress. Susan currently lives and works in New York City.
The Lake Wales Arts Council extends a special thank you to Peterson & Myers, P.A. for making this, and all of our exhibits possible through their generous sponsorship.
